Born in Hyderabad, Sindh on 25 December 1962, Aslam Khwaja joined left politics in the late 1970s during General Zia's martial law with the student wing of the Communist Party of Pakistan. He later worked as a reporter and sub-editor with leading Sindhi newspapers, wrote and translated over three dozen books in Sindhi, Urdu, and English, volunteered with the Edhi Foundation (including translating Abdul Sattar Edhi's autobiography into Sindhi and Urdu), and participated in India-Pakistan peace efforts such as the Delhi to Multan peace march.
